Posh played their third match of pre-season and registered their third and most comfortable win. After winning their previous two matches 5-1 and 4-2, Posh eased to a nine-nil win.

Facing local Southern League side Peterborough Sports, Posh scored three goals in the first half and six in the second including a third screamer in three matches for Siriki Dembele.

Young striker Matty Stevens was denied on a couple of occasions before winger Joe Ward finished off a cross from loanee Tyler Denton, who was playing on the left-side of midfield in this match rather than left-back which is where he played on his debut.

Mid-way through the half and Posh doubled their lead when Denton scored his second goal in two appearances. He was set-up by left-back Colin Daniel allowing the Leeds United player to slot the ball into the corner of the net.

Just before the half-an-hour mark and it was three-nil. Danny Lloyd followed in the footsteps of Denton by claiming his second goal in two matches before Denton was denied another goal when having an effort cleared off the line before a Daniel shot was blocked.

Half-time: Peterborough Sports 0-3 Peterborough United

Posh boss Steve Evans only made 10 changes at half-time with goalkeeper Aaron Chapman the only player to feature for the full 90 minutes.

For the third match on the trot, Siriki Dembele has scored early in the half and it was his another impressive strike from the edge of the box which flew into the top corner of the net. George Cooper nearly made it five when his shot hit the inside of both posts! Cooper had another chance soon afterward after a shot by Mark O’Hara was parried by the home keeper but the midfielder blazed his effort over the bar.

Gwion was next to hit the woodwork before another shot by O’Hara was too hot to handle to make it five-nil. Ten minutes later and it was six with teenager Morgan Penfold getting his name on the score sheet when he goes round the keeper before slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Three more goals were then scored in less than 10 minutes. Cooper was brought down in the penalty area allowing Gwion Edwards to slot home the resulting penalty. Dembele then scored his fourth goal in three games with a delightful flick before Cooper scored arguably the goal of the match with a shot from distance into the top corner.

Final Score: Peterborough Sports 0-9 Peterborough United

Posh 1st-half: Chapman, Daniel, Yorwerth, Bennett, Naismith, Denton, Reed, Woodyard, Ward, Lloyd, Stevens.
Posh 2nd-half: Chapman, Freestone, Tafazolli, Baldwin, Cartwright, Edwards, O’Hara, Trialist (Rodgers), Cooper, Penfold, Dembele.

PSL didn’t provide much opposition for Posh so it was good to see a first clean sheet and to see the goals being spread around a number of players rather than us relying on mainly one player!

A tougher opposition is needed before the season kicks off next month but there are only four matches remaining before Bristol Rovers arrive at the ABAX Stadium for the opening game of the season.

Up next is a trip down the A1 to face St Neots on Saturday. After that, they take a trip to Portugal for a week away where they play two matches during that time. The final match of pre-season is on 28th July when Bolton Wanderers arrive at the ABAX Stadium to christen the newly laid pitch.
