Despite a spirited effort and a very creditable draw, circumstances have contrived to end our Championship dream and Posh will be playing League One football next season.

With a squad further depleted by injury, Jim Gannon was forced to plumb the depths of the squad to select an eighteen. James McKeown took the keepers jersey with the bench made up of some youngsters.

Posh got off to a dream start, with only 5 minutes played, Ryan Bennett opened the scoring with his first ever goal for Peterborough. It might have been a scrappy goal with the ball being poked over the line but it gave us hope of a miracle on Easter Monday.

Sadly the lead was to last for only two minutes with Barnsley equalising through Iain Hume who netted a cross that came in from the right. From that moment on, Barnsley were the better team in the first half and Posh had to rely on McKeown to pull off a couple of good saves.

All square at half time, Posh slowly got back into things I the second half after McKeown had pulled off a top class save from Foster. Craig Mackail-Smith went one on one with the keeper but the keeper came out on top before, with 13 minutes left, Posh regained the lead through a superb goal.

It came from the boot of Tommy Rowe who blasted home from twenty-five yards to leave Steele, in the Barnsley goal, with no chance. Posh could have increased their lead with both Reuben Reid and Sergio Torres trying long range shots but any hopes of a rare away win were quashed in the 84th minute when Hume scored his second of the game from six yards out.

So, as we`ve suspected for a long time now, it`s a return to League One for Peterborough and probably a time to rebuild a squad that fell short of Championship standard.

A lesson learned for next time perhaps?
