CATCH 22

Chairman Darragh McAntony recently revealed on his website that he wants Posh to have a 22-man squad for the coming 2007/08 season. With this in mind, Vital Posh have attempted to discover which areas the boss will be looking to strengthen over the coming weeks.

Currently on the transfer list are Ben Futcher, Richard Butcher, Danny Crow, Justin Richards, Trevor Benjamin, Guy Branston. It can be assumed that, for the most part, these players will leave London Road over the next two months.

Along with the new summer buys, that leaves the Posh squad eighteen strong. Below are those under contract for the team next season.

In goal: Mark Tyler, Shwan Jalal (2)

In defence: Shane Blackett, Adam Smith, Craig Morgan, Danny Blanchett, Charlie Lee, Chris Westwood. (6)

In midfield: Micah Hyde, Adam Newton, Gavin Strachan, Peter Gain, Dean Keates, Chris Whelpdale, Jamie Day. (7)

Up front: Aaron Mclean, Craig Mackail-Smith, George Boyd. (3)

One would assume that with a squad of twenty-two, DF will be looking to have two players available for each position. Given the above names, that would leave Posh in search of:

– two defenders
– one midfielder
– one striker

In more precise detail, the four would perhaps include two right-sided full backs, a left sided midfielder and a striker. Given that the current three strikers are all fairly short, this would perhaps leave Posh chasing the services of a tall, target man to operate along the front line.
