Cheltenham v Posh (Preview)

Posh end their League One fixtures, for 2008, with a trip to Cheltenham.

In fact the fixture at Cheltenham is followed by a FA Cup 3rd round trip to the Hawthorns to take on Tony Mowbray`s struggling West Bromwich Albion side.

Therefore, what better way to finish 2008, might we add a very successful 2008, with an away win and three more points?

Our credentials as possible automatic promotion candidates took a blow when we lost at Leicester but confidence has been restored as Darren Ferguson remarks, following the narrow 1-0 win over Millwall,

‘Losing at Leicester so heavily in our previous game was a huge setback but it is always important to respond well after a defeat and that is something we did.”

‘We were excellent throughout the first half against both 11 and 10 men but it was the case of being the opposite in the second half when we were nowhere near clinical enough and found ourselves hanging on a bit.”

‘But at the end of the day we have beaten a side above us in the table so this must rank as a big win.’

The Cheltenham game is also a huge game and one we must win, it`s also the last fixture we`ll play before Gabriel Zakuani is able to return to the side.

With Zakuani absent, it`s likely that Charlie Hill will continue in the heart of the defence alongside Craig Morgan.

Elsewhere, we doubt whether Darren Ferguson will change matters too much and he`ll be looking for his strike duo of Craig Mackail-Smith and Aaron McLean to trouble a home defence that has conceded more at home (15) than they`ve scored at home (13)

Cheltenham are languishing in the bottom three with only twenty points and have won only 4 games at home, losing 4 also and drawing 3.

On paper, it`s a game Posh will be relishing and here at Vital Posh, we have every reason to feel that we`ll be returning to London Road with another three points safely in the bag knowing a win wick out pressure on the teams immediately above us – Oldham, Millwall and Scunthorpe.

Come on Posh – go for it!

It’s a game you should win but I find it interesting that one of your main rivals managed by our very own Roberto Di Matteo, are hesitant about making the automatic promotion places, do you beleive jumping two divisions in as many seasons is a step too far?

Let’s achieve promotion before we worry about things like that! I’d like to guess our owner wouldn’t be afraid to invest to strengthen the squad but after being in the doldrums for so long it would be great to be in the Championship – what a result!
