Peterborough only signed Chris Whelpdale at the end of last season from Billericay, but the 21-year-old has made an instant impact, being a first-team regular this season, so he has been rewarded with a new four-year deal, much to his delight: ‘After getting promoted at the weekend, a new contract tops it off,’ Whelpdale told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. ‘I never expected to play so many games this year coming from non-league but the gaffer has confidence in me.’

He is predicting exciting times ahead for Posh, so he hopes this is merely the beginning, he added: ‘The key to our team getting promoted is that we have such a young and enthusiastic team who want to go places in their careers.

‘This could be the starting point to lead Peterborough to the higher leagues.

‘It’s so good to play with the likes of (George) Boyd and (Aaron) McLean in training, and seeing them perform and get better helps me improve.’

Will Whelpdale have as big an influence on Posh’s season in League One as he did in League Two?
