Peterborough United issued a thank you to the Posh and West Ham fans that turned up to clear the snow off the London Road pitch.

Peterborough United Chief Executive Bob Symns has issued a statement to the club website praising both sets of supporters who arrived at London Road armed with shovels on early on Saturday morning.

A plea had gone out the day before the sell-out npower Championship clash for volunteers to help clear the snow.

Despite the best efforts of hundreds of fans, the London Road pitch was frozen after overnight temperatures plummeted to -15!

Local Football League referee Kevin Wright came in to inspect the pitch but he had no alternative to postpone the match.

Symns said to the club website: ‘We would just like to thank our supporters for the magnificent effort in firstly attending in sub zero temperatures and then clearing the football pitch of snow within a couple of hours.

‘We would also like to thank our friends from West Ham who also attended to help with the clearance and the banter between both set’s of fans also kept everybody going. This is the side of football that people need to know exists – two set’s of fans working together for a common goal.

‘However, we were all beaten by the -15 degrees, which managed to get in at the surface below the snow and frost covers. We called in local Football League referee Kevin Wright, who in conjunction with the match referee, made the only decision, which was to call the game off.

‘We are looking for an alternative date and will release further details we have them,’ Symns said.

Wright added: ‘The frost covers are not made to deal with these abnormal temperatures. When I was driving in to Peterborough, it was -12 and I knew we would have a difficult challenge.

‘However, I have to say that the work had been organised and undertaken by the football club and it’s supporters was fantastic and they did everything they could to try and get the game on,’ Wright said.

There are three potential dates currently identified for the re-arranged match. Once a date has been agreed, details will be published on Vital Posh.
