Crewe 1 Posh 1

With the first snow of winter (what do you mean it`s only October?) sweeping the region, thoughts of a possible postponement at Gresty Road surfaced.

Thankfully, that wasn`t the case and Darren Ferguson, as we expected, chose the same eleven that started against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Crewe had the first shot, from James Bailey, but if flew wide. Posh responded with a corner from Russell Martin that Charlie Lee headed over the bar. Craig Mackail-Smith then tried his luck with a shot but the keeper caught it cleanly.

Peterborough kept the pressure on and Aaron McLean saw a shot blocked. Gabriel Zakuani then saw a header from a corner saved but the Crewe rearguard was finally breached in the fourteenth minute when Aaron McLean made it three in two games with a shot from twelve yards.

Peterborough maintained the pressure and George Boyd saw the Crewe keeper, Collis, make another save. McLean then had another shot blocked as Posh kept up the pressure.

O`Connor, of Crewe then shot wide as the home side tried to get back on level terms. Crewe were suddenly having more pressure and Lewis did well to tip a header by Lawrence over the bar.

As we passed the half hour mark, Mackail-Smith saw a shot blocked. Zakuani then picked up a yellow card for unsporting behaviour before Williams did well to head clear an in-swinging Crewe corner. Lewis was then forced to parry an O`Connor shot as Crewe pressed for the equaliser.

As half time approached McLean headed a chance wide. It had been a good first half, Posh had edged possession and had the better chances but Crewe had come back into matters as the half ended.

The second half started with Mackail-Smith firing a shot wide from twenty-five yards out. Lee then did well to block a shot from Miller of Crewe as the game ebbed and flowed.

Whelpdale then saw a shot blocked as Posh sought that second goal that might just sew things up. Whelpdale then saw Collis save another effort before McLean forced the keeper into another fine save.

Collis was certainly being kept active as Mackail-Smith then forced him into another good save, surely that vital second goal would come. A Williams foul then gave Crewe an opportunity but Lewis saved O`Connor`s free kick.

Crewe made the first change of the game introducing Schumaker in place of the injured O`Connor. Just past the hour mark Posh made their first change with Batt replacing Whelpdale.

Lewis then saved from Abbey as Crewe pushed forward. Lewis then had to react smartly to collect a cross from Brayford. With less than a quarter of the game Micah Hyde replaced Charlie Lee in a tactical switch. Crewe replaced Miller with Pope.

Lewis then had to react smartly to deny Donaldson as Crewe pushed for that equaliser with ten minutes to go. Both sides made further changes with Torres replacing McLean for Posh and Carrington replacing Abbey for Crewe.

With eight minutes to go Posh were keen to hold out and further their winning run. Posh pushed forward and Batt fired over. With three minutes to go Posh conceded when Pope beat Lewis with a shot with a right foot shot.

It was to be the goal that deprived Posh of two points, we wonder what Darren will make of it!
