“I haven’t spent any money yet, but I will. We’ve agreed terms with a couple of other players as well, but they haven’t committed to us yet.”

That is the quote from boss Steve Evans in Peterborough Today after capturing his first two new players on free transfers. However, one of those players who “hasn’t committed to us yet” could come from down the A1.

Stevenage striker Matt Godden has a year left on his contract but it appears the Hertfordshire club, according to HITC Sport, have agreed a fee with Posh to sell the 26-year-old.

If he did agree to join us, all three newcomers would stand at 6 foot plus! Size is something we’ve never had down the years but it looks like Evans is building a squad of taller players.

Godden has just completed his second season at the Lamex Stadium and although he didn’t hit as many goals as he did last season (21), he still notched 14 this term which gives him almost an average of a goal in every other game. He also scored one goal in every two matches for his previous club Ebbsfleet United including a run of 15 goals in 17 matches!

He was named the League Two Player of the Month for February 2017 and finished the season as Stevenage’s Player of the Year.

Godden also has the attitude that Chairman Darragh MacAnthony tweeted about during his impromptu Q&A on twitter this week after he dropped down into non-league to rejuvenate and get regular football. The main aim was to bounce back and make a name for himelf in the Football League and he certainly has done that at Stevenage.

Could Godden make the step up again to League One? If we do end up signing him, we’ll certainly find out next season.
