Norwich City and Aston Villa are the latest teams rumoured to be interested in signing Peterborough United forward Dwight Gayle!

Dwight Gayle celebrates scoring Poshs second goal against Cardiff

The 22-year-old has seen a dramatic rise in just two years after playing non-league football with Stansted in just 2011. Dagenham and Redbridge then spotted the striker playing for the Airportmen and gave him his chance at League football.

Gayle was on the books of Arsenal as a youngster from the age of seven. He spent five years there under the leadership of Steve Bould before drifting into park football alongside his mates before being picked up by Stansted.

In his first season at Stansted, Gayle found himself in and out of the team yet still managed to score 27 goals. Things got even better the following season as he hit 42 goals! It was this form that saw him move to Dagenham but he spent the majority of his first season on loan at Bishops Stortford where he continued to bang in the goals. 29 goals in 42 matches earned the youngster the right to start for Dagenham at the start of the 2012/13 season.

Seven goals in Dagenhams first 18 matches of the season then saw him earn a lucrative loan deal to Championship side Peterborough United. He certainly made his mark right from the off as he scored seven times in his first 9 matches. He ended the season with 13 Championship goals from 28 appearances!

That form and goalscoring rate from a young forward has certainly got him noticed around the Leagues. Harry Redknapp watched Gayle during his last Championship match at Crystal Palace and is expected to be a target for QPR during the summer but now Norwich City and Aston Villa are the latest teams to show an interest in the forward.

National media have this week reported that Villa are preparing a £4 million bid for Gayle during the summer as boss Paul Lambert looks to overhaul his side and bring in younger players and Gayle fits the bill.

Can Posh hold on to him? Only time will tell but we all know Posh will stick to their guns over how much they will want for their star striker.

Darren Ferguson is fully expecting clubs to show an interest in his prize assets as he said: “I expect there will be interest in players like Dwight Gayle and Lee Tomlin, but we will deal with offers as and when we get them. We did it with Aaron Mclean, Craig Mackail-Smith and Ryan Bennett as well as others, but I`ve told every player to go away and be prepared to get ready for life in League One.”
