We never saw this one coming! Peterborough United have today appointed Steve Evans as their new manager.

The day after Steve Evans resigns as manager of League Two side Mansfield Town and arrives at the ABAX Stadium to watch Posh beat League One strugglers Walsall, he is installed as the new manager to replace Grant McCann on a “long term contract”!

The statement issued by Posh is as follows:

Peterborough United Football Club are pleased to announce the appointment of Steve Evans as the club`s new manager.

Evans will be joined by assistant Paul Raynor at the football club and both have penned long-term deals at the ABAX Stadium.

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony said: “The football club, its staff, Academy and first team players need an experienced promotion winner as first team manager to take us forward for the immediate future. As soon as somebody of the calibre of Steve Evans called to register their interest in the vacant position, there was no time to waste and I made the phone call, potential terms were discussed and we are now in a position to announce Steve as our manager.

“He is a serial promotion winner, including promotion from League One, has managed multiple clubs in the Championship and has an incredible reputation for getting the best out of his players with a never say die attitude and will to win. We are delighted to have both Steve and his assistant Paul Raynor on board for what we hope will be a fruitful, productive and successful long-term partnership for many years to come.”

Evans does bring a certain amount of baggage with him but there is no questioning his capability of getting teams promoted including from League One so he has been there and done it! He`s enjoyed promotions with Rotherham United, Crawley Town, Boston United and the club where he started his managerial career Stamford.

Apart from the Stags, the only side he didn`t achieve promotion with is Leeds United but he did guide the Whites away from the relegation places where they were just one point ahead of the dreaded drop zone when he took over finishing in 13th place, 19 points from the relegation places.

He was on course at the Stags to help them in to the play-offs at a minimum leaving them in fifth place and just two points away from the automatic promotion places!

Evans inherits a Posh side sitting three points outside the play-offs and with a game in hand but are a point behind the side in seventh who have a game in hand on Posh!

Will Evans be the catalyst to get Posh into the play-offs this season?

There`s been a mixed bag of views on Evans becoming the new Posh manager although the majority are in favour of this appointment:
