Vital Posh looks at previous matches between Doncaster Rovers and Peterborough United.

Peterborough United travel to the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday looking to make it two wins in a row when they take on basement outfit Doncaster Rovers. An emphatic 3-0 win over Bristol City saw Posh win for the first time in eight games last weekend. By coincidence, the last time they travelled to Doncaster, Posh had just played Bristol City!

Rovers were unfortunate in their last outing after going 2-0 up against Leeds only to see Leeds fightback and snatch a 3-2 win in the 99th minute!

Posh are currently 18th in the npower Championship with 37 points from 31 matches. Rovers are currently bottom with 24 points from 30 matches. There is just one point separating the bottom three teams, but Rovers are four points from 21st place and safety; which is occupied by Nottingham Forest.

Rovers and Posh have played each other on 31 occasions in the League and it couldn`t be closer with just 5 draws and 13 wins for each team!

At Doncaster, Rovers have won 7 league matches against Posh, drawn two and lost six.

Last Time Out at Keepmoat Stadium

Posh travelled to the Keepmoat Stadium after only 12 League games of the 2009/10 season. Posh were 3rd from bottom of the Championship with 8 points while Rovers were 5th from bottom with 11 points.

Posh had struggled to adapt to life in the Championship following promotion the season before but were looking to pick up their first away League win of the season.

Posh made a good start winning the games first corner following some good work by Tommy Rowe while Craig Mackail-Smith had the first shot of the game which was saved by veteran goalkeeper Neil Sullivan.

Another good move by Rowe allowed him to get a cross in with the Rovers defence only able to clear to Chris Whelpdale who did one of his trademark shots. From a full 25-yards, his effort went blazing high over the goal!

It was against the run of play that Rovers took the lead. A tricky skimming shot from Dean Shiels went through a crowd of players and Joe Lewis did well to get to it but as he parried the ball away Billy SHARP was on hand to tuck the ball away for an undeserved lead.

The goal certainly brought Rovers to life as they started to get into the game and thwart Posh going forward. However, it was from a counter attack that Rovers doubled their lead. Some good inter-play between Sharp and Hayter eventually led to Dean SHIELS being provided with an opportunity which he grabbed with both hands as he curled an excellent effort past the dive of Lewis.

Doncaster were now well on top as they battered Posh. Gaby Zakuani made a last ditch tackle on Sharp just at it looked like he was going to make it 3-0.

If Rovers first goal was against the run of play, then so was Posh`s goal. Tommy Rowe was the creator again as he produced an excellent cross which found the head of Aaron McLEAN who powered the ball past Sullivan.

Appeals for a penalty by Posh were waved away after James Chambers appeared to handle the ball in the box from a goal-bound McLean shot.

Half-time: Doncaster Rovers 2 – 1 Peterborough United

A double substitution by Posh at half time saw “Dave” Diagouraga and Danny Rose replaced by Dean Keates and Lee Frecklington.

It was Frecks who had Posh`s first chance of the second half but his effort was deflected wide. A George Boyd cross was then cleared as Posh pressed for an equaliser. A cross by Whelpdale was met by McLean but he couldn`t connect properly and failed to test Sullivan.

Doncaster had an excellent opportunity to extend their lead to 2 goals again but Hayter was denied by a superb save from Lewis. Shiels gathered up the rebound but his effort was blocked by Morgan.

Boyd was having a very ineffective game for Posh as he was substituted with Charlie Lee coming on in his place.

A long range effort by Lewis Guy was well saved by Lewis before Rowe had a chance at the other end but put his effort wide of the goal.

With just six minutes left of the game, Rovers made all three points safe following an inswinging corner from Shiels was met, unchallenged, by Jason SHACKELL in the six-yard box who powered his header past Lewis.
