What did Nick Barmby and Darren Ferguson think about Saturdays match?
Hull City
The Tigers went into a game for the first time with Nick Barmby as permanent manager of Hull City and he was happy with the result at the end of the game especially as he felt Posh were the better team overall: “We rode our luck in the first half hour and maybe they should have had a penalty.
“If it had happened to us we would have been disappointed not to get a penalty. But we have had a few penalty shouts go against us recently, so maybe it evened itself out.
“Then in the second half I thought the shape of the team was a lot better. All credit to the lads as they worked it out what they should be doing and we showed what we can do. We could have scored a lot more goals than we did.”
Peterborough United
Posh boss Darren Ferguson was disappointed with the result and the decision making of the referee but was delighted with the performance put in by his players: “The penalty incident is such a bad decision. When we asked the referee at half-time why he didn’t give it, he said that the goalkeeper made an attempt to win the ball but didn’t win it. So he was basically saying it was a penalty.
“The boy [Kearns] has got a six-inch gash in his leg. But what can you do? However, we were excellent and that is the best we have played for a while. We should have got a result.
“Emile had two great chances early on and did everything right. He was just unlucky. We were far more fluid in the first half, but we didn’t test their goalkeeper enough in the second half.
“I’m happy with the performance as a whole though and there are a lot of positives to take from the game.
“Mark Little getting 90 minutes was definitely a highlight for me. It will do him the world of good.
“It was good to have Nicky Ajose involved again as well. He knows the seasons hasn`t gone well for him, but I never write players off and he has been excellent in training.”
Chairman Darragh MacAnthony was also gutted about the penalty decision as he said on Twitter: “I watched the Football League show and if ever there was a penalty that was it. In front of the linesman as well. I always wonder if officials and their bosses watch the Football League show and think ‘wow I got that wrong` or get embarrassed.
“I guess we`ll never know.”
Looking ahead, Fergie believes the next two home matches should allow Posh to get back to winning ways: “We face two home matches which are both winnable. Our long-term target of reaching 50 points remains and we can go a long way towards that by picking up six points in the next fortnight.
“They are both teams we can expect to beat at home and I will pick the players up and make sure we are ready for them.
“The players shouldn`t take much picking up anyway as they were excellent at Hull. We were the better team over the 90 minutes and I told them that after the game.
“We also get a couple of players back next weekend. Tommy Rowe and Grant McCann should both be fit.”
