Northampton Town midfielder Michael Jacobs is out of contract at the end of this season and has yet to sign a new contract.

The 20-year-old has been at the Cobblers since he was 10 years old and as he is under 24, Northampton would be due compensation should he leave in the summer.

There are Premiership and Championship teams reportedly interested in Jacobs while one un-named Championship club has had a bid for the player turned down.

Cobblers chairman David Cardoza told BBC Radio Northampton: ‘We hope he stays but there are big clubs interested.

‘There have been a number of Premier League clubs watching him – but we have offered him a good contract. To be here might even be better for him.’

Jacobs came to prominence when he scored in front of the Anfield Kop in their Carling Cup win in September 2010. His goal put Northampton 2-1 ahead of Liverpool. The match was decided by a penalty shoot-out where Jacobs also converted his spot kick.

Cardoza hasn’t abandoned hope that Jacobs might choose to remain at Sixfields but it will be completely down to the player and whether any bids are accepted for him.

Boro have been tipped as the Championship team interested in him on another Town forum. Would be a good move for him, although it wouldn’t please many of us!

He fits in with our policy regarding player signings but does he have the height, build & power that Fergie says he needs to improve the current Posh squad?
