Following Chris Kirkland’s back injury, which has meant he has had to return to Wigan, Peterborough ‘keeper Joe Lewis has been called into the senior England squad for the friendly with America this week.

Lewis, 20, only made his U21 debut for England against Wales recently but could become one of only a small group to represent England at full international level as a player from outside the top two divisions should he play any part on Wednesday.

Director of football Barry Fry was delighted for Lewis, and the club: ‘This is fantastic news for Joe and Peterborough United,’ Fry told the official website. ‘It will be a fantastic experience for him.’

Lewis signed for Posh from Norwich for a club record fee of £400,000 in January.

Well must have been a shock for him. Good to see Capello is considering players from outside the top-flight, and the Championship!

It is indeed a shock, but he did play a blinder for the U21’s. Reward for a good performance and a promotion for someone from the U21’s who was already within the England squad.

What an amazing call up by Capello. Great to see if we have talent outside the Premiership he’s not scared to put them in.
