Peterborough United 2 v 3 Hull City

Date: 18th September, 2004
Venue: London Road
Attendance: 5,745
Referee: Lee Probert

It`s been 7 years since Posh and Hull have met in a League meeting. The last meeting at London Road was on 18th September 2004 in a League One match where Hull were the victors in a 3-2 win.

Posh started and finished the scoring in this game as Calum Willock gave Posh the lead after only two minutes while an Andy Clarke header finished off the scoring in the 93rd minute.

In between these two goals, it was very much Hull who dominated proceedings so it was no surprise that they turned round the early advantage Posh had taken by equalising through Elliott mid-way through the first half. Two second half goals from Leon Cort and Elliott`s second of the game gave Hull a 3-1 lead.

Although Hull dominated large parts of this match, it was Posh who controlled the early part of the game. Moments after taking the lead, Posh had another chance as a deep free kick from Andy Legg found Willock at the far post but Lewis cleared his goal bound shot. A smart reverse pass from Chris Plummer then fed Jenkins who could only find the roof of the net with his cross-cum-shot.

On 12 minutes, Danny Sonner had Posh`s next chance with a 25-yard shot but his effort went wide. Sonner had a further chance after neat work by the Posh midfield set him up but his shot was deflected into the arms of the Hull keeper Myhill.

Hull got themselves back in the game on 22 minutes when Elliott headed powerfully past Posh keeper Mark Tyler.

Posh tried to reply straight away and a header by Clive Platt set up Legg but a tackle by Cort prevented him from getting his shot away. Ireland then saw his looping head from a corner saved comfortably by Myhill.

The first substitution of the game came on 31 minutes when Willock went off with a hamstring injury and was replaced by veteran Andy Clarke.

Hull`s equaliser seemed to change the course of the game in their favour and they came more into the game. On the stroke of half-time, Elliott hit the outside of the post with a vicious shot.

Half-time: Posh 1 – 1 Hull

Hull came out flying and after moments of kicking off, Elliott was again causing Posh problems as he forced Tyler to tip the ball over for a corner. With only 8 minutes of the second half on the clock, Hull took the lead as Posh keeper Tyler misjudged the flight of the ball from a corner and saw Cort head in at the far post.

Posh did try to respond with two headed efforts – one from Ireland and one from Platt. A double substitution from manager Barry Fry saw Curtis Woodhouse and Ryan Semple enter the fray replacing Platt and Simon Rea. This change also saw a change in formation with Andy Legg partnering Andy Clarke in attack!

On 65 minutes, Hull were in complete control when they added their third goal following a deep cross to Elliott who slotted his shot into the back of the net.

Posh now posed very little threat to the Hull goal or even the Hull back four!

Woodhouse did put in a threatening cross with 10 minutes remaining but this was cleared by Lewis. However, deep into added time, Andy Clarke picked up a consolation goal when heading in a Sonner cross.
