Leeds 3 Posh 1

Our trip to Yorkshire ends in a major disappointment!

Any thoughts Posh had of closing in on the top two were quashed when they suffered a dramatic 3-1 defeat up at Elland Road.

However, I can`t help thinking the margin of the win flatters Leeds United. For long periods of the game Posh more than matched them and on another day the score line could have been all so different.

With Tom Williams not available through injury Charlie Lee filled in and there were no surprises at all in the eleven selected by Darren Ferguson.

With the first half underway it was apparent that Lee Trundle was the Leeds player Posh had to keep more than a watchful eye on, his penchant for doing the unpredictable probably the reason Leeds had recruited him.

With both defences looking on top it took a spectacular 30 yard shot from George Boyd to get the heart pounding, unfortunately for us Ankergren in the Leeds goal dived full length to keep it out.

Joe Lewis, in the Posh goal, was then forced to save from Robinson after Douglas had engineered a chance and as half time approached a Becchio header went just past the post.

With forty-five minutes under our belts, we hoped Posh could go on to better things in the second half but just past the hour mark it was to be Leeds that were to grab the opening goal of the game.

It came from Beckford, on as a substitute for Becchio and the substitute was to prove the difference between the two sides. Sadly, Lewis must take some blame for the goal as he failed to gather a routine looking shot from Johnson, with Beckford netting the loose ball.

With Posh looking to get back into the game they were dealt a killer blow less than ten minutes later when Beckford got a second. This time there was an element of skill involved and his finish gave Lewis no chance.

The two goals in ten minutes could have knocked the stuffing out of many teams but to Posh`s credit they didn`t give in. Indeed when Mackail-Smith got his 19th goal of the season with eleven minutes left perhaps a point looked on the cards.

Unfortunately with Posh committing men forward they were always susceptible to the counter attack and in the 90th minute that`s exactly what happened when Howson netted.

However, it`s not time to be down-hearted; it`s time to look forward to Crewe on Tuesday night, a Crewe side that got stuffed by Northampton today!

Hmmmm ….. Leeds 14 shots on target, Peterbro 4 ….. Leeds 9 corners, Peterbro 2 …….. I know there are lies, damned lies and statistics, but in the final third there was only ever going to be one winner yesterday. Watch out, top 6 ……!
