Leeds United have made enquiries regarding Peterborough Uniteds skipper Tommy Rowe.

Tommy Rowe

The left-sided player started last season on the sidelines after picking up a nasty shoulder injury during pre-season but his return to the side coincided with an immediate improvement in results for Posh after they’d suffered seven straight defeats from the start of the season.

Rowe has just one year remaining on his contract and has advised Posh that he would like to keep his options open rather than signing a new three-year contract. In line with club policy, Rowe was then placed on the transfer list and it is Leeds that are the first club to express an interest.

Posh Director of Football, Barry Fry, confirmed he has had discussions with Brian McDermott, the Leeds United manager: ‘I`ve had Brian McDermott on the phone about Tommy and I`ve also spoken to their chairman Ken Bates and their chief executive Shaun Harvey, but Leeds just don`t have enough money.

‘We`re sorry to be losing Tommy, but he`s made it clear to us that we could offer him £20,000 per week and he still wouldn`t sign a new deal.

‘That`s not to say he won`t be here next season because we won`t give him away. And if Tommy is here we know we will continue to get 100 per cent from him as he`s a terrific lad.’

Posh signed Rowe in 2009 from Stockport County and he has gone on to play 156 matches for Posh, scoring 18 goals including one in the League One Play-Off Final two seasons ago against Huddersfield Town.

The 24-year-old has been one of Posh’s most reliable players over the years and he was deservedly given the captains arm-band last season which sadly ended in relegation thanks to a final minute goal conceded in the last match of the season.
