Posh Chairman and co-owner Darragh MacAnthony has kept his word on a promise he made to midfielder Marcus Maddison when the 24-year-old agreed a new contract last summer.

MacAnthony promised “Magic” Maddison that if Posh failed to fulfil higher League football at the end of this season, then he would be allowed to leave and be placed on the transfer list.

Since joining Posh in August 2014 from Gateshead he has gone on to appear 177 times, scoring 42 goals and creating a further 62 goals for his teammates! This season Maddison finished third top scorer with 12 goals but he also created a further 22 goals which we’re sure Jack Marriott is very thankful for!

Confirming to the official Posh website, MacAnthony said: “When I sat down with Marcus last August and agreed a new contract with him, I gave him my verbal assurances that were we to fall short and not gain promotion, I would allow him to leave the club subject to an offer acceptable to the football club and place him on the transfer list.

“Marcus has been in his four years with the football club our stand out attacking midfielder and one of the best players offensively outside of the Premier League and the Championship. He has had an incredible career with the Posh and it is only right that I stick to my word and give him the best chance possible to further his ambitions of playing further up the football pyramid so with sadness today (Thursday), I can confirm he is available for transfer.”

Despite originally being named in the retained list, Maddison will now be available for transfer with a clutch of sides interested in signing the winger. The question now is where will he end up and will it be at the same club as Jack Marriott?
