Peterborough United midfielder Grant McCann has announced he is to take a break from international football.

Grant McCann - Northern Ireland

The 33-year-old midfielder made the announcement today as he wants to spend more time with his family and concentrate on his player/coach role at Peterborough United.

McCann tweeted: ‘My main objective is to get Peterborough back in to the Championship and to concentrate on coaching with the Under-15s.

‘If I’m ever needed to play again for Northern Ireland then I will be there.’

‘I’m at an age where club football, my coaching and family come first,” continued McCann. ‘I have decided to take time away from international football – I haven’t retired as such.’

The Northern Irishman has won 39 caps since making his debut in 2001 against Malta. He has scored four goals and of those 39 caps, he has started 26 matches.

He was last in the Irish squad for their latest international match which they won 1-0. McCann was an unused substitute in that match against Russia.
