It is understood by a local Peeterborough newspaper that Peterborough United failed in a bid to sign Crawley Town centre back Kyle McFadzean last Friday [24th February].

Crawley are expecting an improved offer from Posh who are one of four teams interested in signing the defender.

Posh did fail in a joint bid of £1.9 million for both McFadzean and Tyrone Barnett on transfer deadline day but they have since agreed a deal for Barnett believed to be in the region of £1.1 million. Barnett made a successful debut on Saturday when coming on as substitute to score an equaliser in added time at Doncaster.

With central defender Ryan Bennett making his final appearance for Posh last Saturday before moving to Premiership outfit Norwich City, Posh are looking to bring in another centre back.

As part of the Bennett deal, Posh can bring in a player on loan from Norwich, however, they are also keen on taking McFadzean on loan with a view to a permanent signing come the end of the season.

Posh Chairman Darragh MacAnthony has, via Twitter, denied the report of this failed bid though.

Posh have recently signed Shaun Brisley from Macclesfield, but they view him as one for the future.

Speaking after the Doncaster game on Saturday, Posh boss Darren Ferguson confirmed: ‘We have a couple [of centre-backs] in mind. We`ve been talking and hopefully those talks are carrying on over the weekend.

‘I could play Craig Alcock at centre-back, but I don`t want to have to do that.’

Alcock missed the game on Saturday due to picking up a hamstring injury during training last week. He is not expected to be fit for this coming weekend’s fixture away at Crystal Palace.
