Preston North End midfielder Paul Coutts has rejected the chance to join Darren Ferguson for the third time in his career.

Posh boss Darren Ferguson has been a long time admirer of Coutts after originally snapping him up from Highland League side Cove Rangers.

When Fergie left Posh and joined Preston, he returned to Posh to sign up Coutts for a reported £500,000! Not a bad investment by Posh and a quick profit on their original outlay of just £25,000.

It was widely rumoured that Posh were interested in Coutts when Fergie returned to London Road but nothing could be agreed with Preston as they wanted to return to the Championship at the first time of asking.

However, with Coutts having just one year left on his Preston contract and the 23-year-old being one of their highest earners, Preston are keen to move the player on and accepted a bid from Posh.

Coutts couldn’t agree personal terms with Posh though and has rejected the chance to return to London Road.

Should Preston sell Coutts before his contract expires, Posh will receive some of the transfer money. Posh had a sell-on clause included when selling him to Preston and so would be entitled to a percentage of any fee Preston receive for him.
