Peterborough United made it a hat-trick of wins as they stunned Wolves into silence in their Boxing Day clash at Molineux.

Boxing Day matches are notoriously bad affairs for Posh but Posh have now made it two Championship wins in two successive years. Last year George Boyd returned to haunt his former loan club Nottingham Forest while this year Posh turned in another very good performance to humble former Premiership outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers.

A 3-0 win at Molineux was achieved thanks to an excellent all round performance by the team that started off the season with seven straight League defeats.

Wolves were happy to keep possession of the ball and pass it around but Posh were resolute in their defending to deny the hosts any clear cut chances. Posh on the other half made a few chances with two of these falling to the in-form Dwight Gayle. The first chance saw him fire just over the bar after aiming for the top corner while the second chance saw his left footed effort from the six yard box saved by Ikeme.

It wasn`t long before Posh took the lead when an excellent run from the impressive Joe Newell ended with him pulling the ball back to the penalty spot to find Lee TOMLIN [pictured below] who fired the ball into the net off the underside of the bar with his left foot.

Wolves did apply more pressure as the game entered the latter stages of the first half which saw efforts from Jermaine Pennant, Bakary Sako and Stephen Ward but Olejnik denied the hosts each time.

It was Posh that struck again though just before half-time. A driving run from Tommy ROWE saw him cut inside onto his right foot and curl a low shot past the diving Ikeme. That wasn`t the end of the action as Gayle had yet another chance on the stroke of half-time to increase the lead further which unfortunately came to nothing.

One change was made at half-time by Wolves which saw Ward replaced by Sigurdarson. They also changed their formation to match up with Posh in an attempt to stem the flow of attacks Posh had had in the first half.

It didn`t make a lot of difference as within two minutes of the restart, Tomlin had an effort easily saved. Pennant had another effort go wide of the Posh goal moments afterwards as the hosts tried in vain to get back into the match.

More good play between the front pairing for Posh ended with Gayle hitting a shot wide of Ikeme`s goal. Substitute Sigurdarson headed wide from a Foley cross as the match went into the final third of the game.

Posh were in a Winter Wonderland after 69 minutes when a Joe Newell cross from the left found Mark Little but instead of trying to make it two goals in two games and against the team he used to play for, he hit a loss cross back across the goal to find GAYLE who converted at the first time of asking as he beat the defender to the ball.

Dwight Gayle

Wolves still huffed and puffed but just couldn`t create any real threats to the Posh goal while Posh always looked dangerous on the attack.

The impressive George Thorne [pictured below] was substituted late on but he would`ve been delighted with the match and the final result as Wolves are arch rivals to his parent club West Bromwich Albion! He did suffer a knock during the game and it is touch and go whether he will be fit for the next Posh encounter.

George Thorne

Wolves could have no complaints about the final result as Posh were strong in defence, creative in attack and combined skill and graft in midfield.

If Posh can continue with the form they have shown over the last three matches, then the final two games of 2012 and the remaining season should see Posh comfortably move up the League to safety.
