Notts Forest v Posh – the Forest view

Ahead of the game against Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day, I had the opportunity to ask a few questions to the editor of Vital Forest.

Here are the responses:

1. You had a change of manager over the summer. What were your thoughts when it was announced Steve McLaren was to be your new manager?

The sacking of Billy Davies was greeted with disappointment by many fans at the time. Some saw the reasoning behind the decision, whilst others thought it madness to get rid of a manager who delivered back to back Playoff finishes, as well as saving us from certain relegation in his first season. The appointment of McClaren was seen by myself as a positive one and made up for the loss of Davies at the time. It all went pear shaped as we know. Firstly and most importantly, because he was severely let down and hindered in the transfer market by the chairman and the club, to the point of being mis sold the job and secondly, because he was a lousy Championship manager.

2. What were your hopes, fears and expectations for the season under McLaren?

I bought what our CEO said at the time of McClaren’s appointment. He was brought in to finish the job Davies started. In other words, the aims and aspirations were promotion. As things very quickly transpired, that was never going to happen.

3. How do you feel the team performed under McLaren and do you think he did the right thing in resigning after just 10 games?

We were a shadow of the team that finished the previous two campaigns with relative success. In fact, we were unrecognisable. He nearly resigned after 6 games and not many fans would have blamed him. He would also have left with his reputation intact if he did go then, but alas, that’s not how it ended. By the time he did resign, most supporters were glad to see him go.

4. Have the fans taken to the current manager and is he the right man for the job?

We’re a different club working under a different remit now. We’re now officially skint and for all intents and purposes, have to sell before we buy and become self sufficient. Steve Cotterill’s reign is still in its infancy and it’s too early to say in all honesty whether he’s right or not, but he’s as good as any manager we can realistically attract at the moment. He has a tough job on his hands that’s for sure.

5. You took George Boyd on loan from Peterborough for the latter half of the 2009/10 Championship season. He didn`t get to play much. Why do you think that was and what did the fans think to him?

According to Billy Davies at the time, he wasn’t fit enough. Some say Davies never wanted him and that’s why he never played. The brief spells he did play, I thought he looked lively. He had plenty of pace, which we desperately needed then and still do.

6. Where do you think Forest and Posh will finish this season?

I think we’ll struggle to be honest.

Forest should have enough quality to avoid the drop, but we have a bad history in trying to avoid relegation. It’s a fight we traditionally lose. Much will be down to Cotterill. If he can instil enough self belief in to the team, then hopefully we’ll be safe. If not, then I fear the worse.

I think you guys will be comfortably safe.

7. What are your impressions on Posh this season?

Your scoring plenty of goals. I think only Southampton have scored more than you so far. I must admit that I had you down as strugglers this season, but fair play to you for proving me wrong.

8. Which player should Posh be wary of going into this game?

Difficult question at the moment. We don’t have anyone standing out.

The one player we do have who can be a match winner on his day is midfielder Lewis McGugan. He has the ability to change a game in an instant. He can score from anywhere on the park and can deliver a defence splitting pass.

The problem for Lewis and Forest in particular this season, is it doesn’t happen often enough.

9. Which Posh player do you believe will be a threat to Forest?

I’m going for Emile Sinclair.

I think he’ll be out to prove a lot of people wrong at NFFC. I wasn’t too upset when we let him go, but his 10 goals this season, suggests I might be wrong on that.

10. What is your prediction for the match?

I’m going for a hopeful 1-0 win.

The stats indicate it wont be a home win for us, but we have to end this goalless and winless streak soon.

Many thanks to Kev at Vital Forest for answering the questions.

I`m looking forward to the match and hopefully Posh can get a rare Boxing Day win.
