Peterborough United are looking for a new right-back but have eyes on two players to fill the void.

With the departure of right-backs Michael Smith to Hearts and Hayden White to Mansfield Town, Posh are on the look-out for just one new right-back.

With a change in formation this season, which will see Posh play with three at the back, there is a limited need for a right-back.

Posh have taken one right-back to Spain with them while another right-back will arrive at the club on Wednesday when the players return to the ABAX Stadium.

The right-back currently on trial is 22-year-old Liam Shephard. Shephard has spent the last four years at Premier League side Swansea City although he has played just one FA Cup game for them. He has been out on loan three times, each time at Yeovil Town.

Initially, Shephard was brought in at Yeovil by former Posh manager Gary Johnson during the 2014-15 season in League One on a youth loan deal. He made 20 appearances for the Glovers at right-back but the following season saw him play just a handful of matches, this time on the right hand side of midfield.

Last season, Shephard reverted back to his more accustomed right-back position, playing 46 matches in total scoring one goal, against Barnet.

On his return to Swansea at the end of last season, he was released by the club which coincided with the end of his contract.

Shephard has been out in Spain since day one with the rest of the Posh squad but as far as Posh Chairman Darragh MacAnthony is concerned, he may not be the one because Posh boss Grant McCann hasn`t been knocking his door down wanting to sign him up.

McCann though wants to see him in action before making any decisions as he said: “Liam is a lovely, very well grounded lad and a good player but it`s hard to judge someone properly in training sessions. I want to see him play a couple of games before coming to a decision.

“Liam`s had a good upbringing at Swansea and he`s played regularly in the Football League with Yeovil which is a plus.”

Shephard will play in the opening pre-season game of the season on Saturday at St Albans. Another right-back could also feature in that match as Posh have agreed a deal with a Premier League side with the mystery player due to arrive at the club on Wednesday when the rest of the players return to training in the UK.

MacAnthony has confirmed to Vital Posh that Posh are only looking to sign one right-back so it will be a battle between Shephard and the mystery player to convince McCann that they are the one that deserves the contract at Posh.
