Peterborough United 1 – 0 Sheffield Wednesday
Location: London Road
Date: 27th April, 2013
Attendance: 13,938

There was a lot riding on this match and with it kicking off after all the other matches were complete, both sides knew what the situation was. The Owls knew that a point would be enough to mathematically secure a place in next seasons Championship while Posh had dropped back into the relegation places and only a win would drag them back to the final safety place albeit on goal difference.

It wasn`t a classic match by any means of the imagination and nerves showed at times as Wednesday boss Dave Jones said after the match: “There were a lot of nervous people out there on the pitch and it was always going to take something special to win the game.

‘We didn’t do any better or worse than Peterborough did, but they had that one moment that mattered. It was sloppy on our part to concede the free-kick.

‘It was always going to be a tight game and it was always going to take the kind of goal that settled it to win it.

‘We haven`t created that much and I thought we were under par in the first half. We were better in the second half but we couldn`t get the breakthrough.

‘But listen, the lads have given everything this season so I`m not going to start knocking them now.’

Dave Jones

The defeat for the Owls brings them into the final day dog-fight for survival as they are now just one point above the relegation places. Their final match is a home match against the out-of-form Middlesbrough who have nothing to play for apart from pride.

‘There are several teams still in danger but our destiny is in our own hands and that is what is important. We’re not in the position of having to rely on other results,” continued Jones.

‘We`ve worked so hard to get to where we are and we don`t want to see all that hard work go to waste.

‘Staying in this league will be a far bigger achievement than winning promotion last season to get here.’
