Crystal Palace are on the verge of signing Peterborough Uniteds highly rated striker Dwight Gayle for £6 million!

Dwight Gayle

Crystal Palace co-owner confirmed via twitter that they had agreed a deal with Posh for Dwight Gayle and it is rumoured to be in the region of £6 million plus add-ons!

Gayle, who was playing for Ryman North League outfit Bishop`s Stortford just 13 months ago, is believed to be in London today[Friday, 28th June] to discuss personal terms. He will then have a medical before signing on the dotted line for the newly promoted Premier League club. The transfer is expected to be officially announced on Monday [1st July].

It will be devastating news for everyone connected to Posh to see Gayle depart London Road after less than one season as he was seen as crucial to Poshs chances of gaining promotion back to the Championship at the first attempt.

It is obviously excellent news for Gayle and the clubs bank balance (as well as Dagenham and Redbridge who get a 20% slice of the fee) but with Posh manager Darren Ferguson saying earlier this week that he had seven strikers on his books and he needs to see the transfer listed players leave before he can bring anyone in. It sounds as though he won`t be looking to replace Gayle until the likes of Barnett, Sinclair and Ajose have all departed!!

That is bad news for Posh fans as Sinclair keeps turning teams down after Posh have accepted offers for him (he`s obviously on very good money at Posh!!) while there has been very little interest in Ajose! It does mean that Posh could be looking at a strike force of unwanted players (excluding Tomlin) or teenagers!

In reflection, this is the sort of offer Posh cannot afford to turn down and it allows another Posh player to head in to the Premier League next season.

Posh Chairman Darragh MacAnthony will no doubt take back some of the money himself to replace the millions he has already ploughed into the club since purchasing it but hopefully there`ll be some extra cash for new players. This could allow us to offer a bit more for Jack Payne at Gillingham as the Posh central midfield area is very light. Defensively we should be OK, with or without Gaby Zakuani, so that just leaves the forward positions to sort out but this could take a lot longer to sort out.
