Peterborough United have announced their retained list with seven players being placed on the transfer list and three being released.

Jack Payne v Coventry

After yet another disappointing season, Posh Chairman Darragh MacAnthony is determined to put a promotion challenging squad together for next season but it`s meant tough decisions by releasing players and putting others on the transfer list.

Three players have been released. Goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik and winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing have both departed after their contracts expired while the short term contract for David Norris has also finished.

Of the contracted players, seven have been placed on the transfer list with captain Jack Payne heading that list. In the poll run by Vital Posh to see who you`d keep or sell, 20% of the votes for Payne were for the midfielder to be sold. Since his first season at Posh, he seems to have gone backwards and lost that flair and dynamism.

Joe Newell v Rochdale

Posh player of the year Joe Newell is also on the transfer list. Not too many Posh fans will be disappointed to see the back of Newell despite winning a host of end of season awards. Newell is coming into the final year of his contract and although his agent has confirmed he would be prepared to sign a new contract, it is also believed the player wanted a significant payrise which was rejected by Posh.

Two players bought this season have also gone on the list. Central defender Christian Burgess and striker Luke James were brought to the club for not insignificant money but are now surplus to requirements. MacAnthony did say he would prefer to see James go out on loan for a season rather than sell him but he wants to have two 20-plus goalscorers at the club and James doesn`t fit that bill at this stage of his career.

The other players on the list are striker Kyle Vassell who finished the season at League Two mid-table side Oxford United, midfielder Kane Ferdinand who also spent a large amount of time out on loan during the last two seasons and defender Shaun Brisley.
