Anyone contemplating going to our friendly at St Albans on Tuesday evening and may fancy making an afternoon of it may be appreciative of the following information.
The Hertfordshire City is sat between its more infamous neighbours of Luton and Watford but is a cultural and historical delight.
Whilst the football ground, in Clarence Park, remains pretty adjacent to the Bedford to St Pancras railway line the city can only really be appreciated by venturing into the city centre.
Once in the city centre you`re within walking distance of some of the finest Roman ruins in Southern England. If you venture down towards the old clock tower, at the end of the market place, then disappear in the direction of the magnificent St Albans Abbey, you`ll find a stretch of Roman wall and directions to the amphitheatre at the other end of the park.
A museum that lies between the amphitheatre and the park contains some of the finest artefacts from the Roman era. But that`s enough of that you`re asking which watering holes should be visited.
Perhaps the most interesting is on the walk down to the Abbey and situated right on the edge of the main park. It`s called The Fighting Cocks and is rumoured to be the oldest pub in England.
After a few beers in that hostelry you could try walking back up the hill towards the city centre and there are a variety of public houses, The Boot and The Fleur de Lys to name but two, nestling around the old clock tower, all very inviting and pleasant on the palate.
After there, head off towards the other end of the main road through the town and you`ll see a couple of bars that are situated adjacent to the church. Further down the road, before the College are another couple of bars and by now you should be all cultured up and lubricated enough to cheer on the boys in their first pre-season friendly on home soil!
However, if you are a last minute arrival and don`t have a afternoon to spare, look out for some decent public houses called The Horn, The Green Man and O`Neill`s (a Wetherspoons) all in the immediate vicinity of St Albans City railway station.
