On his return to London Road, albeit as manager of Preston North End, it was Darren Ferguson that left Peterborough with a smile on his face last night courtesy of the narrowest of victories.

With London Road still discussing the blast from Darragh MacAnthony that made so many headlines, it was interesting to see that Mark Cooper had recalled want-away striker, Aaron Mclean. George Boyd, rated as doubtful for the clash, was able to start making it 139 consecutive league appearances for posh, far and away a club record. Absent though was Craig Mackail-Smith.

For the visitors, Darren Ferguson, fresh from a FA Cup defeat at the hands of Chelsea, was able to field his latest present from his dad in the form of his Premier League experienced striker, Wellbeck.

Posh started the game well with Chris Whelpdale coming to prominence with two shot, both of which missed the target though. Boyd followed suit with two efforts of his own and Josh Simpson saw a shot saved before Charlie Lee saw a decent effort blocked by the defensive skills of Brown.

However, after all the early pressure Posh fell a goal behind in the thirty-fourth minute when Wallace found Neil Mellor and the ex-Liverpool striker, from just outside of the box, beat Joe Lewis with an excellent shot.

As half time approached Reuben Reid shot wide and Josh Simpson and Jake Livermore had further efforts that failed to get the game back on level terms. Half time and Posh had it all to do to retrieve this game.

The second half was more even, Joe Lewis was forced to save a Chaplow shot before Mellor was deprived of his second goal of the game by a smart block from Lewis. Posh were making little in-roads into a resolute Preston defence, Mclean saw a shot blocked before Lewis was once again called into action to deny St Ledger.

Entering the last quarter, Mellor shot wide when well placed and Boyd saw a shot well saved by Lonergan before two minutes from time, our last hope of a point disappeared when McLeod, on as a half time substitute, shot wide.

If Mark Cooper believes we need ten wins to secure our status, it looks as if those ten wins are going to have to come from our last nineteen games! A tall order methinks!
