The first of our prestige friendly fixtures against Aston Villa, played on Saturday, saw Posh lose 3-0.

With the squad still ravaged by a flu bug several first choice players were missing including the likes of Lewis, Mclean and Keates. Also missing was Mackail-Smith with his niggling groin problem.

However, home debuts were given to Diagouraga and Rowe with new loan signing Pearce making his debut as well. Up front, Wright would have been hoping to capitalise on his hat trick in midweek at St Albans.

As promised, Martin O`Neill fielded a side with numerous well know faces in.

In front of a sparse crowd, Posh started well but the visitors showed some classy touches and despite our bluster it came as no surprise that they took the lead with Andreas Weimann netting with a close range header.

The second half saw Posh make a plethora of changes with Day, Frecklington, Lee, Green and Gaughran all being introduced in the forty-sixth minute.

Villa remained the stronger of the two sides and doubled their lead when Curtis Davies scored with a superb solo effort. There was no way back for Posh and Villa wrapped up the scoring when Sidwell netted.

On reflection, the score line was perhaps a little harsh but are these sort of fixtures more about getting valuable match practise and honing fitness?
