Jim Gannon got off to the perfect start as manager of Peterborough United Football Club winning his first game in charge.

After being in charge less than a week it was interesting to see that the starting eleven he selected contained far more of those players who had served us in back-to-back promotion campaigns than had featured in recent weeks.

Back on were Williams, Morgan and Lee in the defence whilst up front the familiar trio of Boyd, Mclean and Mackail-Smith were chosen. In the middle, Gannon chose to use Rowe, a player he knew all about after having him under his wing at Stockport.

With under 9,000 inside London Road it didn`t take Posh too long to get on top of the visitors. As early as the ninth minute Posh were ahead after Mclean netted with the goal coming after Boyd had turned the Rangers defender, Connolly, inside out before setting up Aaron.

Posh, with Rangers looking awful, should have opened up a bigger lead. Chris Whelpdale and Tommy Rowe both had chances to do so but couldn`t take advantage whilst the visitors were reliant on Marcus Bent and Lee Cook for rare excursions into Posh territory.

Leading by the solitary goal going into the second half, Queens Park Rangers did create a chance or two. One saw Joe Lewis react well to smother a shot from Connolly before red card mania ensured Posh would have to do something foolish to throw away the three points.

The first red card, waved in the direction of Mikele Leigertwood, came after a wild challenge on Tommy Rowe and the second, close to the end, came after Peter Ramage committed a second yellow card offence, on the same player.

Down to nine men, Queens Park Rangers were always up against it and perhaps there afternoon was perfectly summed up when Bent shot horribly high and wide when placed well. Not that I was complaining after all three points has, this season, become something of a rarity for us Posh fans.

Next up for Posh, a tricky away trip to Cardiff in midweek!
