Posh maintained their challenge for that automatic second promotion spot with a 2-1 win over Scunthorpe United on Tuesday evening.

Sadly, after a plea from Darragh MacAnthony for the people of Peterborough to flock to London Road to give the side the support they deserve, the attendance was a paltry 5,637. And this against a side that were playing Championship football last year!

For the fixture Darren Ferguson resisted the chance to bring back our top scorer Craig Mackail-Smith, instead opting for Sergio Torres with George Boyd pushed up alongside Aaron McLean.

Unfortunately, Posh didn`t have the better of the first half and went in at the break losing 1-0 courtesy of a goal from the on-loan Arsenal player, Lansbury.

The poor Posh showing in the first half brought a swift response at the interval with Tom Williams and Craig Mackail-Smith coming on for Chris Westwood and Sergio Torres.

Indeed the poor showing was later to be mentioned in Darren Ferguson`s post match interview whereby he remarked,

“I may well have got it wrong with my selection, which is not something I like having to admit.”

“But we rectified things by making changes at the break and went on to get a big, big win. It was like chalk and cheese.”

Indeed it was, Posh had by far the better of the second half and it didn`t take too long to equalise. Just past the hour mark the ever-dependable Whelpdale scored to give Posh that boost they needed to go on and win.

However, with the home crowd growing increasingly frustrated at the failure to get the winner, and with it looking like the game would end all square, up popped our top scorer, Craig Mackail-Smith to give us all three points.

The win, coupled with the fact that MK Dons could only draw at home, means that Posh are five points clear of their neighbours but the MK Dons have three games in hand.

With a home fixture, a local derby, against Northampton Town this Saturday, Posh remain in a prime position to keep the pressure up on those in the pursuing pack.

More of the same please lads!
