Posh – A Dying Dream!

It seems along time ago when we were looking forward to the season ahead.

We harbored dreams of challenging for a play-off place, we harbored dreams that in three years time we`d be knocking on the Premier League doors bellowing we`re Peterborough let us in.

Now, some six months down it all looks much like too much bravado, instead of nestling nicely in the upper reaches of the Championship we`re odds on to go straight back down to League One.

Our season hasn`t really got going, victories have become a rarity and our current points total, when compared to points totals that have meant survival in the past few seasons, means we`re going to have a heck of a good second half to the campaign to survive.

So where have all our aspirations and dreams died?

Were we prepared for life in the Championship or has our inexperience caught us out?

Reflecting upon how I perceive, from reading between the lines, things have turned out, I have a suspicion our business plan was always going t make things hard to do anything other than survive.

We pride ourselves on being a club that sticks to a rigid pay structure, we`re never going to pay wages that would lead us down the road to financial ruin, therefore, we were never going to attract players who were familiar with what is needed to survive and prosper in this division.

Also, our much heralded policy of plucking rough diamonds from non-league football and polishing them into players that have prospered found that the once rich seam was now mined out.

Instead, and this isn`t meant as a slight on those mentioned, we persisted with a policy of recruiting young players from the league beneath us in the hope that a side capable of prospering in the Championship could be moulded.

An admirable plan but one, so far that hasn`t come to fruition. Now, despite promising not to vent any displeasure towards Mark Cooper, I can`t help but think we`re plucking at straws with an influx of players that stink of pushing the panic button.

Whilst not wishing to sound negative, I can recall when we`d achieved back-to-back promotions, Darren Ferguson proudly announced that those who`d carried us this far would be given a chance to take the Posh dream further, now, with Martin, Russell, Westwood and Keates already gone (along with a host of fringe players) and Mclean soon to join them, I can`t help wondering if that aforementioned chance was jettisoned too early!
