In the build up to the trip to Pride Park we speculated as to whether our club captain, Russell Martin, would make the starting eleven.

As it turned out our doubts were well founded with Charlie Lee slipping into the berth Martin held all last season, therefore there became a necessity for a new leader to be appointed, on the field.

That honour went to our centre back Gabriel Zakuani who upon being granted the accolade has this to say in the post match interviews,

‘It was an honour to be asked to skipper the side and I think I have the capabilities to be a good captain.’
However, Gabby`s reaction to the last gasp defeat mirrored that expressed by Darren Ferguson, when he commented to the assembled journalists,

‘The goals we conceded were disappointing from our point of view. We have practiced defending set-pieces a lot and we faced a lot of them in this game.

‘We dealt with most of them very well and I’m sure it won’t be a problem for long. It was a real shame to let a late goal in because we had recovered from a shaky start to play very well.

You can say that again Gabby, it kind of ruined the whole day we think!
