With Darren Ferguson looking to improve the quality and depth of his squad, the rumour mill has been working at full speed generating the names of those we may be interested in signing.

However, it`s been very rare for the club to offer comment on those that are being chased. One such exception though is Ryan Bennett of Grimsby.

The young defender was, apparently, the subject of a bid from Posh, a bid that was turned down, a bid that was nowhere near the ludicrous figure of £1 million wanted by Grimsby.

It was a price that drew comment from Darren Ferguson who clarified the situation by remarking to the local media,

‘We tracked Grimsby defender Ryan Bennett for months.’

‘But he signed a new contract which entitled them to ask for a fee and they wanted £1million, which was quite ridiculous.”

‘That has happened to us a couple of times in the past when we were quoted big fees, only for the players to move for much less to different clubs.”

‘Hopefully, now we are one of the smaller clubs in the Championship, we will be quoted more realistic transfer fees for players we are trying to sign.’

But will we return with an improved offer for Ryan Bennett? That remains to be seen.
