The perils of unearthing a gem are perfectly illustrated by events that are being reported in the media.

Yesterday, we warned of the dangers facing us keeping our excellent young keeper, Joe Lewis, with his name constantly in the frame for international recognition, albeit at U21 level at the moment.

Well today, if the media are correct, the vultures are preparing to swoop with three clubs supposedly keen to try and prise Joe away from London Road in the January transfer window.

First to be mentioned in the tabloids this morning are Queens Park Rangers who, not content with being linked with our manager, are now, supposedly, preparing a £2 million bid for the young keeper.

With Joe having only cost circa £400,000 when signed from Norwich City, it would represent a significant profit, a profit that might make those who run the club think twice about turning it down.

If they do so, the tabloids are also suggesting that Everton and Stoke are also monitoring Joe`s progress.

Like we implied yesterday, it`s the downside of having such a talented keeper.

  • Unearthing a gem I’m not so sure about to be honest, he was rated at Norwich, and they got a good fee for him so he went. You’ll make a profit out of him though. Personally I’m not convinced we (QPR) should go for him for that price-tag.
