There we were only a couple of weeks ago speculating whether Joe Lewis would make the final party for the forthcoming U21 European Championships only to awake this morning to find that Joe has a new career.

Sat on the bench last night, Joe must have been convinced he`d not see any of the action. However, with the gaffer, Stuart Pearce, having used all his outfield substitutes, it was Joe who volunteered to dive into the fray when Lee Cattermole picked up an injury.

Our keeper, proceeded to play as an emergency striker for the last fifteen minutes seemingly having the time of his life and prompting Pearce to remark, in his after match interview,

“I`d used all the outfield subs and credit to Joe. He put himself forward to play.”

“He thought it was a doddle. He said he ran around more than Frazier Campbell. I just hope they didn`t realise he was a keeper.”

“We didn`t want to show disrespect though. Is it worse to play with 10 or send the keeper on?”

Well if they didn`t realise at the time, I`m sure they will have done so by now!

For the record, England ran out comfortable 7-0 winners against Azerbaijan in their last warm-up fixture before the tournament proper starts.

Good luck lads from Vital Posh!
