With our Championship campaign only a matter of two weeks away, the nerves are already starting to jangle.
Pre-season started off well but the gulf in class was emphasized when we came a cropper against two of the three Premier League sides we played. Those of hard disposition might also suggest that we only got a draw against Fulham because the London side was easing up ahead of their opening Europa League fixture this Thursday.
Nevertheless there have been some encouraging aspects to our pre-season campaign, although we were beaten (heavily) in two of those fixtures we did have our moments when we more than matched our classy opposition. The versatility of some of our squad also proved to be a positive point, something that George Boyd, our two goal hero on Saturday, was quick to pick up upon in his post match interview whereby he remarked,
‘But next season is all about taking that next step up and it will be hard work every week. A lot of players here have come a long way in a short time but we are confident we can make that step.’
‘I think the manager has players here who can play in a lot of different positions and do well. Look at Charlie Lee, he started against Fulham in centre midfield and ended up at right-back, I came on as striker and the manager has plenty of other options too.
‘We will need to be adapt to different teams and situations next season and we have the players to do that.’
I`m sure we do but I still insist that the nature of our campaign will be determined by our opening eight or nine fixtures!
