Peterborough United have signed Fulham’s England Under 21 left-back Matt Briggs on an initial one month loan agreement.

Briggs will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s sell-out clash at London Road with npower Championship leaders West Ham United.

Briggs, an England under 21 international, scored his first goal for Fulham in a Europa League fixture back in July.

Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson was delighted with his new acquisition as he spoke to the club’s website: ‘To be fair, Matthew is a lad I have been interested in for a while, even when I was at Preston. He is a good size, has great pace, has a good left-foot and I am delighted to bring him to the club.

‘He can play at centre back, but his main position is left-back. He will strengthen us without a shadow of doubt.

‘I have been using Craig Alcock or Tommy Rowe in that position. The majority of games we have won, Tommy has played in midfield and I am aware of that.

‘Matthew gives us another option and he adds a bit of quality to the squad and I am very pleased to have him on board.’

Briggs made history in 2007 when he became the youngest Premier League player in history when he made his senior debut at just 16 years and 65 days. Briggs was introduced as a second half substitute against Middlesbrough on the final day of the 2006/07 season.

Briggs has previously been on loan to Leyton Orient for a month in January 2010 before he captained England’s U19 side to a 1-1 draw against Holland in Waalwijk at the beginning of March.

He also played for England in the 2010 European U19 Championships in France.

He made his first start for Fulham on 25th August 2010 in a 6-0 win over Port Vale in the Carling Cup.

In March 2011, Briggs signed a contract extension keeping him at Fulham until the summer of 2014.

Fulham manager Martin Jol was so impressed with Briggs during pre-season that he was selected for Fulham’s matchday squads for 2011/12. He also recently played in Fulham’s UEFA Europa League play-off victory over FC Dnipro at Craven Cottage.

He certainly sounds a promising player and left back is certainly a position we needed extra cover for.

Vital Posh would like to give Matt a very warm welcome to the Posh.
