Peterborough United sign a second player in January to take their spending over half a million pounds but who is their latest recruit?

George Cooper woke up yesterday [Thursday, 18th January] expecting to head in to training as normal but at 7am, he was heading south east to sign for Posh after a six-figure fee plus add-ons was finally agreed between Posh and Crewe Alexandra.

Negotiations had been ongoing for approximately two weeks and with everything agreed, Cooper signed a three-and-a-half year deal at the ABAX Stadium.

Described as a winger by his former club, the Railwaymen, he is very much an attacking midfielder as can be seen below by the goals he scored for them and with both feet:

The 21-year-old has played 142 times for the Alex scoring fifteen goals along the way but looking at the goals he`s scored, he certainly looks like a great addition to the Posh squad.

He made his professional debut as a 17-year-old in September 2014 going on to make 25 appearances in his debut season, scoring three goals. He also picked up the EFL LFE Apprentice of the Year for League One that season.

This season, Cooper is the second leading assist-maker in the top four English leagues behind our very own Marcus Maddison. Posh Chairman Darragh MacAnthony announced the signing, as usual, via his twitter feed sending Posh fans into a frenzy expecting the sale of Maddison as he tweeted:

Speaking to the official Posh website, boss Grant McCann said: “It is a really good signing for this football club. He can play in a number of different positions. An attacking midfield player is something that we have been looking for and I am delighted to get him.

“He has set a lot of goals up for team-mates at Crewe over the last few years and gives us more competition for places in that area of the pitch. He has had a good grounding at Crewe, can play with both feet, can score goals and is a really good addition for us.”

Former Posh defender Guy Branston is also an admirer of Cooper and compares him very favourably to Posh legend George Boyd:

Cooper, who was out of contract at Gresty Road in the summer, was delighted to have everything sorted out as he spoke to the official Posh website: “Yeah it has been a long day. I set off at around 7am this morning (Thursday), but it is all done now and I cannot wait to get started. I am only 21, but I have played a lot of games for my age and I like to be creative, I want to assist goals and I want to score goals. I haven`t scored as many as I would have liked this season and that is something that I definitely want to improve on.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Crewe. I have been there for a very long time and there are a lot of good people at the club. You are taught very well from such a young age and they have helped me improve and now I am ready for the next challenge.

“When I heard of the interest from Peterborough, I was keen to get things sorted. I know all about the club, they like to attack and score goals and hopefully I can help that. My target is to train well and try and get into the side, but there are a lot of good players here.”

Posh fans could get their first glimpse of Cooper when Posh entertain Oldham Athletic at the ABAX on Saturday but then he will be sitting out of the next two matches. Posh face Lincoln City and Leicester City in the Checkatrade Trophy and FA Cup respectively next Tuesday and the following Saturday.
