The defeat to Southend, even if they did score a world-class first goal, came as a bitter pill to swallow, especially with aspirations so high of lifting ourselves into second place.
After the game, Darren Ferguson offered some candid views in his post match chat with the local news hounds, remarking,
‘We had a great start and we were very dominant in the opening stages. I was just praying that we could get a second goal because that would have made things very difficult for Southend.”
So was I Darren but sadly it never came. Continuing he talks about the two Southend goals that killed us off commenting,
‘But, as so often happens in football, they scored a great goal from right out of the blue and the game changed.
‘We were still the better side until half-time and I stressed to the players that we would need to be patient and the chances would come.”
‘But the own goal killed us. I’m not sure what happened, but it looked like Shane didn’t move his feet quick enough and he’s given Joe Lewis no chance.”
And as for coming back after Shane`s misfortune, Darren pointed out,
‘We didn’t play at well after that. We lost our composure a bit and started hitting long balls into the area.”
‘I don’t know why because I didn’t ask the players to do that.”
‘And then in the final minutes we started passing the ball across the pitch when we needed to get it into the penalty area.”
Thankfully, we have a chance this Tuesday to airbrush that defeat out of the system.
