Peterborough United have made their first signing on the final day of the 2018/2019 summer transfer window.

Speaking live on Twitter and Periscope, Chairman Darragh MacAnthony revealed who that signing was and it’s from a Premier League club…

Ivan Toney has signed a three-year contract after a “substantial” six-figure fee was agreed between Posh and Newcastle United.

The striker has only played a couple of games for the Premier League outfit, or rather 17 minutes of football, which was back in the 2015/2016 season but since then, he has often impressed on loan in League One.

Toney is only 22-years-old so he is still very young in footballing terms but he has a good deal of experience behind him already. Starting out his career at his hometown club Northampton Town, he made 60 appearances scoring 13 times before being snapped up by the Toon in 2015.

After those initial two substitute appearances, Toney has found himself loaned out to sides in League One. Firstly at Barnsley, then onto Shrewsbury Town, Scunthorpe United and Wigan Athletic. He spent the latter part of last season back at the Iron where he scored eight times in 18 appearances. According to the Grimsby Telegraph, the Iron had been hoping to bring the striker back to Glanford Park for a third time but Posh have scuppered their hopes.

Toney has played against Posh during his loan spells. The first time was for Barnsley in a 3-2 defeat for the Tykes although he has only scored once against Posh.

Watch some of the goals he has scored during his career…

He is certainly an excellent addition to the Posh squad but what will that squad look like come 5 pm today when the transfer window shuts. Will we see any more players leaving or departing?
