As the credit crunch threatens to restore a degree of normality to football and also see a few purse strings tightened, our owner, Darragh MacAnthony has spoken out about the need to show some form of prudence.

With rumours circulating about how high the wages are at London Road, Darragh has pointed out that the highest paid player is only ( I say only because for many of us its still a fortune) on £3,000 a week.

Darragh has pointed out that the club has invested heavily in players with the total cost approximately in the region of a million pound, a lot more than some clubs have spent in our division.

Summing it all up Darragh has remarked to the local media,

“I am not a bottomless pit and in current times we need to be prudent, always balance the books and keep our squad at a good level and not top heavy.”

‘Posh have been one of the busiest teams in the transfer market so far this season with the acquisitions of Russell Martin and Sergio Torres for £200k, Dominic Green for £150k, Shaun Batt, Paul Coutts, Andrew Crofts and Gaby Zakuani for over £400k as well as a couple of other youngsters for the future.”

‘You tell me another League One club that has spent nearly £1million on improving their squad with this kind of young talent.”

‘I keep hearing how some of our players are on £8k per week etc and have clauses that guarantee some to be the best paid players at the club.”

‘This is incorrect on both counts and the highest wage at the club is £3k per week which shows how prudent we have been when negotiating players contracts in the current climate.”

‘The pay scale is the correct one for a young squad and ensures there is no infighting or contempt from other players towards some that may be on silly money as everybody here has a good contract and will always be rewarded with new ones when the time is right.”

Looks like we`re, thankfully, heading down the sensible road then!
