There were plenty of rumours flying around today regarding transfer targets for Peterborough United. Vital Posh takes a quick look at them.

Britt Assombalonga

The week started with a very unbelievable rumour relating to star striker Britt Assombalonga. He was apparently on his was to new Championship side Rotherham United!

The Millers are losing Kieran Agard who has rejected a new contract and so will be on the look out for a new striker but surely Britt would be out of their price range? Now if you`re talking about Tyrone Barnett, that could a different matter altogether as Steve Evans has not hid his liking for the striker. Could he now make a move for the unwanted Posh striker?

With Britts scoring achievement last season, many clubs are keeping a close eye on the youngster. There was even a lot of chat amongst the Blackpool fans about Britt but not with him heading there but to Wigan Athletic!

Craig Alcock is looking less and less likely to be heading back to Posh. He has held a number of discussions with Championship and League One sides but he has yet to agree a deal with any club. Could he be clubless come the start of the season?

He may have missed the boat with Posh though as Posh have young right sided player Adam Drury training with the squad with a view to making a season long loan move from Manchester City. Drury can play at right back and on either wing making him a useful addition to the squad.

Drury is only young with little first team experience bar a short stint in League Two with Burton Albion while the only other right back currently on the books of Posh is transfer listed Michael Richens. Richens has failed to break through in to the first team and unless there is a big change in fortunes we could see him depart London Road sooner rather than later.

Ricardo Santos did make his Posh debut at right back in the last home game of last season but he is more of a central defender.

Therefore Posh are in need of a right back with first team experience and it looks like Posh are casting their eye over Swindon Town right-back Nathan Thompson. 23-year-old Thompson has a better scoring record than Alcock, but only just. He has one goal to his name in the 75 matches he`s played for Swindon. He captained Swindon during the latter stages of last season and was voted 2012/13 Swindon Town Player of the Year by the club`s fans.

Nicky Ajose v Swindon

One of the options being bandied about regarding the signing of Thompson was that striker Nicky Ajose, who enjoyed a successful loan stint at Swindon last season, could be part of the bid in a player plus cash offer.

Posh boss Darren Ferguson declined to comment on the speculation: “Look, I’m not going to talk about players who are contracted at other clubs. We have a list of players we are interested in, we shorten that list, we then try and do the deal. We will let you know when we have completed a signing.

“It’s not fair on the clubs or the player to talk about contracted footballers.”

Kgosi Ntlhe watching Dean Cox scoring 2nd Leyton Orient goal

Another rumour that was quashed by Chairman Darragh MacAnthony almost immediately was one being reported by Sky Sports. Sky Sports were reporting that Posh had put a bid in for Leyton Orient midfielder Dean Cox. Darren Ferguson also came out to say he had no idea where the story came from!

Midfielder Cox is entering the last year of his contract with the O`s and it is believed they are looking to cash in on the player. Crawley Town are believed to be interested in the player but have been put off by the asking price!

Cox was the subject of a bid a couple of years ago by Posh which was knocked back but although he would strengthen the Posh first team squad he would also command a large transfer fee and wages to match which is something Posh can`t offer as they must off-load players as they are walking a financial tightrope as they look to stay in the rules of the Financial Fair Play.
