From the Posh Camp – Fergie Praises Sinclair and Back Five
Darren Ferguson said: ‘Emile is a great lad who wants to be a top player. He turned down other Championship clubs, who would probably have been offering more money, to come here.
We knew we were buying someone with a lot of pace and he showed that he can finish as well.
People think we are all about attacking so I feel it is only right to praise the back four and goalkeeper as well. They were outstanding and this is easily our best result of the season so far. We dug in and saw it out.’
Man of the Match was goalkeeper Paul Jones and although he was happy with his performance, he was disappointed not to stop Burnley`s goal.
He told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph: “Goalkeepers always believe they can keep shots out and to be honest I was disappointed not to save Burnley`s goal.
He`s hit it well, but I got my fingertips to it so I might have been able to get the ball over the crossbar with a better touch.
I did make a few saves, but to be honest I`d have been disappointed to have let any of those in. The back four played really well in front of me anyway and restricted Burnley to half chances,
It was a big win for us after losing at home the week before and 10 points from seven games is a very satisfactory start.
I`m disappointed that I haven`t kept a clean sheet yet. That`s beginning to annoy me, but if we keep defending like this then it will come soon enough.
I felt that once we went 2-0 ahead we would go on to win comfortably, but Burnley kept pressing so we had to work hard at the back.
We can now look forward to a trip to West Ham next week. And I believe we can get a result there.”
From the Burnley Camp – Howe Believes Clarets Should`ve Won
Eddie Howe told Sky Sports: ‘Managers are judged on results and ours are not very good at the moment.
I’m accountable for that and am prepared for whatever criticism comes my way, but we really need the fans to stick with us and back the players.
I really thought we should have won this game. Our passing and movement was excellent but we paid the price for two lapses of concentration which allowed Peterborough to score.
Their goalkeeper made a number of good saves but we should have done better on several occasions.’
He went on to tell the Peterborough Evening Telegraph: “We started slowly, but once we got a grip of the match I felt we played some very good football. We carved out chances, but just couldn`t take them and the fact that the Peterborough goalkeeper was man-of-the-match spoke volumes.
We`ve had a poor start to the season, but I`m still taking plenty of positives out of this performance. I was delighted to see the players giving everything for 90 minutes.
We were disappointed to find ourselves 2-0 down, but we kept going and we really should have picked up a point at least as we were the better side.
The fans have every right to be critical, but I`d rather they showed their annoyance with me rather than the players.
It`s a fact that everyone, me, the players and the fans are hurting, but we will get things right. It`s a challenge that I am relishing.”
Vital Posh Viewpoint
Fergie pulled off a surprise move to many Posh fans by starting newcomer Emile Sinclair for the first time since his move from Macclesfield Town. He seemed to struggle with the pace on his fleeting performance against Hull City last week, which was no surprise having stepped up from League Two. However, many fans thought Fergie would introduce him gradually but obviously Fergie had other ideas which definitely paid off.
Having seen Sinclairs debut last week and having watched him during the warm up where his shooting practice looked more like rugby conversions (one shot even went over the London Road stand!), I was dubious about what he`d really be like. I was pleasantly surprised after only three minutes of the game though after a delightful pass from Lee Tomlin set Sinclair free who beat Burnleys right-back to the ball, raced into the area where he showed some tekkers to come inside another defender and then plant the ball into the back of the net.
Sinclair could easily have ended up with four goals on his full debut as he had another chance cleared off the goal line before notching his second goal of the game. In the second half he raced onto a ball from defender Ryan Bennett but rushed his shot as he watched his volley go wide of the post. With a bit more composure, he could`ve taken a couple of more touches before taking a shot, but he will learn as he comes more accustomed to the striking role.
Eddie Howe is obviously getting criticism for the start Burnley have made, but I have to agree partly with his comments that for parts of this game, they were the better team. However, credit must go to the Posh back four who battled away well and the odd times they were breached, Paul Jones stood up well. Although Jones did spill a couple of efforts, he managed to recover the ball before a Burnley player could pounce.
Posh do seem to have learnt from their last time in the Championship and from their games so far this season. They seem to be maturing as a team and look capable of comfortably staying in this division. Don`t get me wrong, they still have a long way to go and prior to this game we went 3 games without scoring a goal, but we are learning all the time. We need to take one game at a time, not get over confident and, with this weekends game in mind away at West Ham, not get overawed by the ground and the occasion.
