Posh – We Agree – We Could Do Better!

Most Posh fans had the away fixture, at Crewe, down as a certain three points, however it wasn`t to be.

Perhaps, we should have heeded the words of complacency mentioned by Darren Ferguson beforehand.

In reality, perhaps our anticipation levels filtered down to the players who, it has to be said, didn`t give one of their better team performances yesterday.

After the match, Darren Ferguson told it as it was and gave a fair post match assessment when he remarked,

‘I have to say Crewe deserved the point and were by far the better side. I thought Joe Lewis, Gabriel Zakuani and Craig Morgan were outstanding and if it wasn’t for them we would have been beaten. After the early goal we always needed that second goal, but we didn’t deserve it.

All fair points. After a spell where we thought we could go on and score a second to secure the game we were the victims of a spirited Crewe fight back whereby our play became sloppy, a point that Darren commented on when he remarked,

‘We didn’t play well, our possession retention was very poor and we got a lesson in keeping the ball. Our passing was poor, we wanted to flick it here, there and everywhere and I thought Crewe thoroughly deserved a point. Crewe have been playing well without getting the results, but I felt if we got ahead in the game we would go on and win because their crowd were on the backs of the players.”

Indeed, the Holland protest launched by the Crewe supporters may well have been instrumental in the side making such a comeback, nothing rankles more than hearing criticism being aimed at someone who you have belief in.

Darren went on to talk about the chances that we spurned, remarking,

“However, we should have killed the game off, Craig Mackail-Smith’s chance at 1-0 kills the game if he scores and then we should have had a penalty when Shaun Batt is felled. I have to be honest, I am disappointed not to win it, but the most we deserved was a point.”

Returning to the performance itself Darren lamented,

‘It is not an acceptable performance, the standards were set by the players and they have fell short of that. I warned them against complacency, it doesn’t matter who you play, if you are not at it, then you will get beaten. We were fortunate to get a point. There are plus points, the two centre halves and Joe were good, but the rest weren’t up to their high standards.

‘I am not going to be to critical because the players have been on a great run of form, that’s 10 unbeaten, but it is a reminder that the squad need to be at it. The players have done me proud recently, but they know themselves that they let themselves down with their performance’

It`s Hereford up next, let`s use that game to blow away the cobwebs and get the three points that`ll see us move up from the eighth place we slipped into last night.
