Posh central defender Ryan Bennett has received his first call-up to the England Under 21 squad.

Bennett has been included in Stuart Pearce`s squad for two European Championship qualifiers away to Iceland on Thursday 6th October and against Norway on Monday 11th October.

Pearce watched Bennett in the victory over Burnley at London Road last weekend and was impressed with the youngsters’ performance at the heart of the defence.

Pearce said: “I`ve have watched Ryan twice recently in games against Burnley and West Ham. He did very well in both matches when playing above his years.”

Other players selected in the squad include Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson, Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck and Everton midfield man Jack Rodwell. Danny Rose, who was on loan at Posh the last time they were in the Championship, is also included.

The Three Lions started the European Championship campaign in emphatic fashion with a 6-0 victory over Azerbaijan at Watford earlier in September.

Pearce is now preparing for the trips to Reyjavik and Drammen as he looks to take a stranglehold on Group 8.

Apart from Bennett, Pearce also brings in another new faces in Blackburn Rovers Jason Lowe, who was in the U20s World Cup squad in Colombia in August.

‘Our start to the campaign earlier this month couldn`t have gone any better really,’ Pearce told TheFA.com. ‘If you win any two matches at international level 6-0 and 4-1 you have to be delighted.

‘There were some very good performances within those games, the new-look squad gelled very well together.

‘It`s only been three weeks since we were together so to have another week-long get-together so close is really good for us. The work starts in earnest now, with two away games coming up it`s important we get what we can on the road and preferably come back unbeaten.’

Pearce added: ‘They are going to both be very difficult matches and important for all teams concerned.

‘We felt from the outset of this group that everyone will take points from one another, and after Iceland beat Belgium and then lost to Norway it`s looking like that will be the case.

‘The games will coming thick and fast, we’ve got these two next week, then a month later we have a game at Colchester against Iceland and one in Belgium. By the middle of November the group will be starting to really take shape.’
