The man in charge of the Checkatrade Trophy Second Round match between Peterborough United and Southend United at the ABAX Stadium is JOHN BUSBY.

Of the six officials that were promoted in May 2016, Posh had the pleasure of five of them very early on last season with John Busby being one of them.

Busby was very active with ‘whistle and flag` for over twelve years before being fast tracked into the EFL following just one season in the Football Conference National!

Even though Busby has made a quick rise into the Football League, he has been involved in a number of prestigious games including County Cup finals, Senior Cup final, FA Vase semi-final, and FA Trophy quarter finals to name just a few.

Despite only being in his second season as a Football League referee, Busby has already officiated two Posh matches including one this season.

The first time was back in January though when MK Dons arrived at the ABAX Stadium and returned to Buckinghamshire with all three points following a four-nil victory! The Dons also picked up four of the five yellow cards shown in the match.

The other Posh match Busby refereed was on the opening day of this season when newly promoted Plymouth Argyle were the visitors at the ABAX but it was a much better results for Posh as they ran out two-one winners. Leo Da Silva Lopes scored the opening goal after just four minutes although the goal was awarded to Argyle defender Gary Sawyer! Junior Morias [pictured above] doubled the lead for Posh with just two minutes on the clock in the second half and although Plymouth pulled a goal back with fourteen minutes remaining, Posh held on for a win. Four yellow cards were shared between the two sides.

The Shrimpers have also had Busby officiate them this season and that came six weeks ago when they traveled up to Wigan to face the Latics. It wasn`t a happy occasion as Southend lost the match three-nil and had midfielder Jermaine McGlashan sent off around the hour mark with the score at one-nil. No other cards were shown in the match.

Southend also had Busby referee them last season and once again it was a road trip for them. This time it was a shorter trip to Coventry City and it was a match they had wrapped up after 23 minutes after scoring two unanswered goals. Nile Ranger scored the opener after two minutes before Ryan Leonard doubled Southend`s advantage. The Sky Blues picked up the only yellow card of the match.

So far this season, Busby has officiated 22 matches issuing 57 yellow cards and three red cards.

Ironically, the last match he officiated came last Wednesday in a Checkatrade Trophy match between Crawley Town and Fulham Under 21`s. The Championship sides youngsters won three-one while no cards were issued in the match.

His statistics for the last few seasons in the Football League are:

2017/18 – 22 matches – 11 home wins – 7 away wins – 4 draws
2016/17 – 36 matches – 13 home wins – 19 away wins – 4 draws

Card Tally For Last Few Seasons:

2017/18 – Games 22 – Yellow 57 – Red 3
2016/17 – Games 36 – Yellow 131 – Red 3

His matches involving Posh and the Shrimpers to date are:

Posh – 2 matches – 1 win – 0 draws – 1 defeat
Shrimpers – 2 matches – 1 win – 0 draws – 1 defeat

The assistant referees for this match will be Anthony Da Costa and Christopher Ward. The fourth official is Alan Young.
