Should he stay or should he Crow?

December 2nd last year. The ecstatic Posh had just defeated League One Tranmere to take their place in the third round of the FA Cup. Danny Crow bagged a superb brace to seal the fantastic victory, and rumours were circulating that Premiership outfit Watford and his former club Norwich were tabling bids.

But, just five months on, Fergie has put the 21-year-old striker on the transfer list and it looks as though the one-time ace could be set to leave London Road.

So, what has caused this seeming fall from grace and could Crow still have a future at the club?

The former Norwich trainee has an impressive goal-scoring record at Posh, netting on 21 occasions in 56 starts. Quick-footed, skilful and with an eye for goal, Crow has bagged some screamers since Mark Wright signed him back in August of 2005. During Danny`s first season at the club, Wright described him as ‘one of the most exciting talents at our level`. He told the Evening Telegraph:

“‘I don’t see how anyone could come and watch Posh and not go away impressed with Danny. It’s not just his goals that make him a special player as his hold-up play, his movement, his vision and his passing are excellent also.

“I played with a young Robbie Fowler at Liverpool and believe me Danny has a lot in common with him.

When Wright left and his assistant Steve Bleasdale took over, Crow continued to perform reasonably well for the side, but a slump in form soon saw Posh`s faint play-off hopes disappear and Crow was dropped from the starting eleven. It has emerged since, following the broadcast of Sky One`s ‘Big Ron Manager`, that Crow himself informed Bleasdale that he did not wish to play for the side on various occasions.

Crow`s questionable attitude came to light on the documentary, which recently won a prestigious television award. He attracted a series of boos at matches following the airing of the show, and many fans have taken a disliking to him.

Danny continued to be selected for the side, and seemed to be combining well with the now transfer listed Trevor Benjamin and Aaron McLean. However, a run of six straight defeats saw boss Keith Alexander booted out of the club and Crow dropped from the side under the new management team, headed by Darren Ferguson.

The arrivals of CMS and George Boyd have further lowered the front man`s place in the striking pecking order, and, now on the transfer list, the once highly promising youngster could be on his way out.

Several League Two clubs have shown an interest in signing him, including local rivals Lincoln City. Director of Football John Deehan said:

‘Of course if Danny was available he would certainly interest me.

‘He scored a few goals this season and having worked with him before he has a lot of good attributes.

‘But the sort of money Peterborough are asking for him would probably be too much for us.’

However, despite interest from other clubs, Crow is adamant that he will not join another League Two club:

“‘I have two years on my contract remaining and if I have to stay and fight for a chance than I will. I’m not going to join any old club and I can’t see myself playing for anyone else in League Two.”


Now placed at around fourth on the pecking order for strikers, and with more forwards set to arrive in the close season, does Crow have a future at Posh? Share you views and opinions on our forum.
