Having had the chance to move into 2nd place, Posh have now suffered 3 defeats. Fergie insists there is no need to panic but there is something strangely familiar to previous seasons!

Peterborough United have just suffered a third league defeat in a row, had two players sent off and are haemorrhaging goals but Posh boss Darren Ferguson is not concerned about the recent results and has said there is no need to panic.

‘There’s no panic. We’ve got 19 points on the table but we feel we should have at least six more,’ Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

‘It’s a third of the way through the league, so if we did that two more times we’d end up with 57 and probably end up in the top 12.

‘I think we’re going OK. It was always going to be a case this season that you might go through two or three defeats.’

Posh have also seen two players sent off in these three games but Fergie was looking at the positives this has shown.

Ferguson said: ‘Southampton are top of the league for a reason and you cannot afford to give away two sloppy goals as we did against the leaders.

‘This is a team that has just beaten Middlesbrough comfortably against 11 men and after the sending off, a lot of teams would have gone under but we showed great spirit.’

‘It’s important we stick together and I don’t see any better evidence of us doing that than what I saw in the second half,’ continued Fergie.

‘Maybe away from home we should let teams play in front of us and hit them on the break, because it worked.

‘But it’s easier said than done when you’ve got 10 men and you’ve got no choice.’

Something Familiar!

It was less than 2 weeks ago that Posh could`ve gone second in the Championship, but the three defeats on the trot has seen Posh drop down to 14th position.

However, Posh have been in similar positions where they could go top of a league if they`d have won, but suffered a drop in form or results only to resurrect their season and gain promotion.

The last example of this was just last season when Posh could`ve overtaken Brighton at the top of League One had they beaten Notts County, but a surprise defeat followed by 4 defeats in six games during October(!) saw Posh drop down to 5th place.

However, we all know how last season ended up, with Posh winning 3-0 in the Play-Off Final against Huddersfield Town who themselves had been on an amazing unbeaten run up to the Final.

Posh celebrate winning promotion in the League One Play-Offs

Another example was in the 2008/09 League Two season when Posh and MK Dons were 2nd and 1st respectively until Posh suffered a 2-1 home defeat by the Dons and then had a poor December which saw them drop down to 6th place, before a return to form and another charge up the League table to automatic promotion.

I know Posh only dropped down to 5th / 6th places but the scenario is the same as we find ourselves in now.

We had the chance to get into the automatic promotion places in the Championship! We have done exceptionally well so far this season and have been competitive in every match. Teams are changing their formations to try to match us up to stop the threat we pose which is a complement to the players and management.

Don`t forget the last time we were in the Championship we only won 8 games all season. We have won six games so far this season and have over half the points we finished with in that fateful season.

We now need to bounce back as we have done in the past. If we can pick things up again we should finish mid-table which will be seen as a success. We can`t worry about the recent defeats but we must learn from the mistakes we are making. We put up a good fight against Southampton on Tuesday and we must show this spirit in all the games we play in?we may even keep a clean sheet if we do!

We have one game before another International break so it will be vital Posh don`t go in to it with 4 consecutive defeats. With people missing through suspension, this now gives the extended squad a chance to show their worth. For example, Danny Kearns finally managed to play for a decent amount of time against Southampton and although it was a massive task, playing with only 10 men, he performed well and I for one, would hope to see him fill Frecklington`s spot on Saturday.

Time will tell how we do this season, but from the first 15 games, things look promising and if we can survive this season, we can hopefully kick on and start to establish ourselves as a seasoned Championship team.
